In celebration of the 400th anniversary of the Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers, The Glasgow School of Art's Silversmithing and Jewellery third-year students were given the brief to create a piece of jewellery that showcased the unique qualities inherent in wire, together with the skills and techniques fundamental within this ancient and fascinating process. Their creative journey encompassed metallurgical research, historical or cultural narratives, and scientific insights while seeking visual inspiration, filling sketchbooks with linear drawings and mark-making. A stimulating embroidery handling session in GSA's Textile Department enriched interdisciplinary thinking, opening up infinite possibilities for designing meticulous, intricate forms, details, and textures using hand-drawn wire. Thanks to the generous Precious Metal Grant from The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust, students could realise their designs in 18ct gold.
